The Rich History of Pewee Valley

Established in 1852 as Smith's Station, Pewee Valley has a storied past that reflects the growth and spirit of our community. The name was changed in 1856 when Charles Franklin Smith established a post office, inspired by the Eastern Wood Pewee bird that frequents our area. This unique origin story highlights the charm and character that define Pewee Valley today.


The site of present-day Pewee Valley was first settled as a stop on the Louisville and Frankfort Railroad in 1852 under the name Smith's Station. The name was changed to Pewee Valley on the establishment of a post office by Charles Franklin Smith in 1856. The name refers to the Eastern Wood Pewee.
